Microsoft May Rename Internet Explorer To Break With Its Sordid Past | Microsoft | Geek.com

More Geek Microsoft By Lee Mathews Aug. 15, 2014 12:30 pm There was a time not too long ago when Internet Explorer was one of the most reviled pieces of software in all of Geekdom. Times have changed, though. IE has gotten a lot better in versions 9, 10, and 11 so much better that Microsoft is thinking about renaming Internet Explorer to make a clean break with the past. Some members of the Internet Explorer development team took to Reddit this week to do an AMA, and one of the more interesting threads was kicked off when user asianorange asked the team if theyd ever considered rebranding the browser and changing its name . Interestingly enough, the reply was affirmative. Internet Explorer 6 remains one of the toughest boss battles in the history of computing, and for years Microsoft appeared to have little interest in supporting modern web standards in IE. Sites that functioned beautifully in Firefox , Chrome , and even Opera rendered like a Picasso painting in IE. Thats all changed, of course. Internet Explorer 11 is fast, fluid, standards-compliant, and packed with awesome tools for Web developers. Microsoft is now fully committed to making sure that the Web just works everywhere. Theyve even given WebGL a boost recently by joining the OpenGL working group. According to the Softies, plenty of ideas get kicked around about how we can separate ourselves from negative perceptions that no longer reflect our product today. Thats been made abundantly clear over the past year or so with the improvements rolled out to Windows 8.1 users. They got the Start Button back, a boot-to-desktop option, and easy access to shutdown options all in response to the Windows 8 blowback. So whats the plan? Does Microsoft have a new name picked out already? Not exactly. Mentions of Windows Internet Ubber Browser 2014 SP1 Ex+ and Ultron definitely shouldnt be taken seriously, but dont be totally surprised if Microsoft does eventually decide that its time for a change and retires the Internet Explorer name. Apple’s Os X Yosemite Public Beta Opens July 24th – Slashgear

The pre-release software won’t require an Apple developer account in order to download, but will be the same version those coders are playing with to recreate their apps in time for the launch. However, you’ll need to get in early if you want to try Yosemite first. That’s because Apple is limiting the number of activations it’s allowing in this first stage of the beta. The company wouldn’t tell us exactly how many copies of Yosemite it plans to distribute, but did say that it reserved the right to modify what number it has in mind depending on demand. Yosemite brings features like the newly-supercharged Spotlight search, cross-platform AirDrop with support for OS X and iOS, and the latest version of Safari. It also introduces a new, iOS-inspired design, complete with translucent windows and a changed system font. Unfortunately, since there’s no companion public beta for iOS 8 , some of Yosemite’s more appealing features aren’t available to try, even in the beta. Continuity, which allows a nearby iPhone to pipe its messages and calls through your Mac, won’t work, for instance. Apple also recommends loading the Yosemite beta on a secondary Mac, since as it’s non-final software there are still bugs to be fixed. Any users spot can be reported using the integrated Feedback Assistant tool. If you still decide to go ahead, the advice is to do a full backup before you install, and then use your Mac as you normally would. Periodic updates will be pushed out between July 24th and the full Yosemite release, while the final software itself will be a free upgrade too.

Newforma Acquires SmartUse – Yahoo Finance

2 hours ago Done PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pica8, Inc., the leader in open systems for software defined networking (SDN), today announced a new initiative to simplify adoption of Linux-based network operating systems (OS) available on bare metal switches by enabling users to download Pica8s network OS for free. Pica8 pioneered open networking when it introduced PicOS , the first network OS that enables customers to easily migrate from conventional networking to SDN using commodity switches. By offering a free-trial download of PicOS, we want to demonstrate that high-performance network hardware and software can be bought separately, just the as server industry has successfully shown through its supply chain model for many years, said Olivier Vautrin, head of Product Line Management for Pica8. PicOS is easy to install, leveraging the open-source Open Network Install Environment ( ONIE ) boot loader, as well as Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) tools that simplify the on-boarding of PicOS on pre-qualified bare metal switches. A PicOS license can be turned on at any time, enabling the user to have full access to the hardware as well as having service and support bundled for a fully integrated package. Licensing options include perpetual (one time), site, and pre-loaded systems . Offering free trial downloads of its PicOS operating system lowers the barrier to entry for organizations wanting to explore SDN, said Brad Casemore, director of research for datacenter networks at IDC. Pica8 recognizes that SDN is still a relatively new development for many customers, and its trying to make the transition easier and more cost-effective with a full-featured OS that runs on a number of bare-metal switches. PicOS is the first bare metal compatible network operating system that enables customers to seamlessly and easily integrate conventional networking and SDN. PicOS provides extensive support for traditional switching and routing protocolsthat is extendable bySDN and OpenFlow capacity through Pica8s Open-vSwitch (OVS) implementation.PicOS offers aunique, comprehensive and flexible configuration management environment from either a Linux shell, a feature-rich command line interface (CLI) or a comprehensive set of APIs (JSON RPC and OpenFlow).PicOS runs as an application in user space in an un-modified Linux kernel, leveraging kernelthread protectionand compatibility with DevOps toolssuch as Chef and Puppet that are popular with server and system administrators. Those wishing to deploy PicOS can choose from a wide selection of qualified bare metal switches or obtain the OS as pre-loaded from the following Hardware Ecosystem Partners and Open Networking suppliers . A base configuration starts with the Linux Switching OS package. For additional functionality, users can select either the Routing or OpenFlow Editions, based on their use case. The complete PicOS datasheet is here The Free Trial is available here . Network operation system using user space standard Debian Linux environment Leverage vast array of standard Linux tools as a common management and operations framework Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) functionality coupled with ONIE delivers a true bare metal to application environment. Rich Layer-2 protocol stack with MLAG, seamlessly integrating into existing architectures Full Layer-2 & Layer-3 ACL support IPv4 & IPv6 Static Routing Rich OSPF and BGP protocol stacks integrating into existing spine / leaf architectures IPv6 routing protocol support (OSPFv3, MBGP) Multicast PIM support NAT (depends on ASIC support) VXLAN network virtualization (depends on ASIC support) Leading OpenFlow 1.4 support through OVS 2.0 Deliver true seamless migration to SDN through CrossFlow mode (Layer-2 / Layer-3 and OpenFlow simultaneously) Leveraging OpenFlow to control MPLS, GRE, NVGRE or VXLAN tunnels, delivering on the promise of open programmability Support for all major OpenFlow controllers (for example: OpenStack Neutron ML2, OpenDaylight, Ryu) l About Pica8, Inc. Windows 8.1 To Have Boot To Desktop Option For Bypassing ‘metro’ Interface | Rohit’s Tech World

Do not risk losing your valuable PC records from a disk drive malfunction. Defend your critical laptop data with Backup Wolf Pc backup software. It is the easiest to use Windows backup computer software on the internet.

A new rumor suggests the drop has promptedMicrosoftto consider reversing course on at least one aspect of the new user interface. Windows Blue Microsoft is planning to change the way its Start Screen operates with the release of Windows 8.1.Thecompany is currently testing builds of Windows 8.1, known as code-name Windows Blue, that include an option to boot directly to the traditional desktop. Were told that the option is disabled by default, allowing users to simply turn on the functionality should they want to avoid the Metro Start Screen at initial boot or login. Even before Windows 8 launched last October, many felt that throwing users into the new Windows UI at startup might not be the best solution for all customers, particularly those focused on productivity (i.e. office workers). Also, since the number of apps created for the new environment was relatively few (even the new Microsoft Office runs as a Desktop app), the benefits of always starting in the new UI were questionable. Microsofts change of heart follows criticisms of its approach to Windows 8 for traditional desktop PCs with keyboard and mouse usage. Accessory makers haveattempted to ease the situation, but Microsoft has faced pressure from businesses and desktop users for options to suppress the Start Screen or bring back the traditional Start Menu and Start button UI. Third-party tools to revive the Start buttonhave proved popular, but its highly unlikely that Microsoft will opt to bring the Start Menu back to life itself.

Half Of All Android Phones Are Still Vulnerable To A Massive Privacy Bug – Here’s How To Protect Yourself – Yahoo News

Browsing for a first rate product to keep your family car in first rate condition and enable you to cope with your automotive maintenance schedule? Check out Automotive Wolf Car maintenance software. 30 day free trial

View photo Half of all Android phones are still vulnerable to a massive privacy bug heres how to protect yourself Software update delays are an inevitability because of the way the Android ecosystem is built, but these delays arent just an annoyance for Android users they can be dangerous. A bug was discovered by security researcher Rafay Baloch in early September, and it caused Androids stock web browser to fail to enforcesame origin policy (SOP), which is a protocol that governs how browsers securely load content from multiple sources. The bug impacted all pre-KitKat devices, and it was patched fairly quickly by Google. But because it takes so long for handset makers and carriers to test and distribute Android updates, a new study has determined that nearlyhalf of all Android phones are still affected by the bug. FROM EARLIER: Fake ID security flaw could be the greatest threat to Android phones yet As noted by ZDNet,Rapid 7 security researcherTodd Beardsley described the bug as a privacy disaster, making it so thatany arbitrary website (say, one controlled by a spammer or a spy) can peek into the contents of any other web page. According to the security experts at Lookout, the bug still affects about 45% of Android phones and tabletsrunning Lookout software. This is likely a very good gauge, as Lookouts software is currently in use on more than 100 million devices. We believe our userbase offers a good look at how Android users overall are being affected by vulnerabilities such as this one, Lookouts Jeremy Linden and Meghan Kelly wrote in a blog post. Our country-by-country data reveals some surprising stats about where people are most vulnerable. Japan is the most vulnerable with 81% of Lookout users in the region with the unsafe browser installed. Spain takes second place with 73%. Phones in those regions may receive updates less frequently, thus they are more likely to be vulnerable. The U.S., on the other hand, has a lower risk because the average age of phones is also much lower. Therefore, fewer of them are vulnerable. As noted by Lookout, here are the steps you should take to protect yourself: If youre running Android 4.3 or older, upgrade! Later Android versions are not susceptible. If you have a phone that does not have the option to update to a newer Android OS version, unfortunately you may need to upgrade your device to a newer, more readily patched version. Download the Chrome or Firefox browser. This is both a more modern and more feature-rich browser that is not affected by the vulnerability. Make the Chrome or Firefox browser your default for opening links that way you dont have to worry about apps using a vulnerable browser. Here are instructions on how to install the Chrome browser on your Android device*: Go to Google Play and download the Chrome or Firefox app Install the Chome or Firefox app like you would any other application from Google Play Go to your settings Go to the apps menu or the application manager View all apps in the app menu Select the AOSP browser (on most phones this will likely be called Internet) Tap clear default The next time you click on a URL, your phone will ask you which application it should open with. Make sure to select the new browser you recently downloaded, and check the always box so it remembers your choice for next time.
