There Will Be One Windows For All Your Devices. Soon.

909 Windows Pro , Windows RT , Windows Phone it’s all very confusing, isn’t it? Microsoft thinks so, too. But pretty soon, you won’t have to worry about what version of Windows your device is running, because they will all be the same. See also: 9 Things You Would Immediately Fail Without Your Smartphone At least that’s what CEO Satya Nadella said to analysts during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday. All signs were already pointing in this direction the different versions of Windows share the same code, and one executive publicly commented that there were too many OSes but this is the first confirmation that Microsoft is working to truly unify its core software. “We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes,” Nadella said. Nadella added that the work will be done “in the year ahead,” putting Windows’ grand unification on schedule with the arrival of Windows 9, due in 2015 at the earliest. When that happens, it would mean phones, tablets, desktop machines and even the Xbox would all run the same operating system, and the lines between Windows Phone and full Windows will be permanently removed. Windows software would simply adapt to whatever device is running it, similar in concept to responsive design. That’s not to say there won’t be different ways the software is packaged for different customers. Presumably, Microsoft would still sell basic and “Pro” versions of Windows, and still offer special tools and custom modifications for enterprise customers. But ultimately, the software will be the same and able to run the same apps something Microsoft has already enabled to a certain extent through Universal Windows Apps , which allow developers to design an app once and know that the app will run across all devices. How will OS unity work on Xbox ?

Microsoft Earnings: As Hardware Kills Profits, Ceo Nadella Seeks Comfort In Software

Beneath the Surface Michael Homnick Microsofts Surface Pro 3 is a bright spot in its tablet lineup, but the company took a huge loss on Surface RT devices. Microsofts other hardware divisions didnt do much better. The Surface line, a titanic money pit since its very birth , finally realized that massive $900 million hit from Surface RT inventory adjustments, which it warned the world about many months ago. Also included in that writeoff, according to the Seattle Times? A hasty cancellation of a Surface Mini that was to have been announced in May. Beyond that, Microsoft kept mostly mum, saying only that the Surface divisionwhich released the Surface Pro 3 this past quartermade $409 million in revenue. The company, as usual, declined to break out hard tablet sales numbers or the lines operating profit or loss. Its very, very likely that Microsoft is continuing its habit of losing money with every Surface sold just like it is with Nokias phones. On the plus side, Microsoft sold 1.1 million Xbox consoles this quarter, an increase of 100,000 units over the same quarter of the previous year, good for an extra $104 million in revenue. An extra 100,000 units is less impressive, however, when you consider that Microsoft was selling onlythe aging Xbox 360 console this time last year, with the Xbox One then only on the horizon. Microsofts been busy backtracking on the Xbox Ones grand all-seeing, Internet-connected vision ever since, and consistently coming in second place in sales behind Sonys PlayStation 4 , month-in and month-out. Xbox unit sales were up, but Microsoft didnt say how many were the older Xbox 360 vs. the new Xbox One (shown above). Microsoft neglected to identify how many of those 1.1 million Xboxes sold were Xbox Ones. If a great number of those had been next-gen consoles, Microsoft no doubt would have crowed about it. Services, not devices Office 365 is a bright spot for Microsoft. So, in a nutshell: Microsofts hardware is stinking up the companys bottom line. Its bread and butter software, on the other hand, is excelling. The juggernaut that is Office 365 Home Premium added another 1 million subscribers this quarter, bringing the total subscriber count for this rising star up to 5.6 million. The overall Commercial divisions revenues were up $1.28 billion year over year as Azure and its ilk continued to shine. Heck, even Windows licensing revenue increased 3 percent overall in an overall bleak period for PC, as businesses replaced aging Windows XP devices with newer computers. The story’s so different on the software side of Microsoft’s ledger: Its Azure software for business flourished even as the company’s hardware stumbled.

Microsoft weighed down by ailing Nokia – Yahoo Finance

Send Thanks! A link has been sent. Done Microsoft weighed down by ailing Nokia By James O’Toole 2 hours ago 0 shares Done It’s going to take more than layoffs for Microsoft to fix Nokia. Microsoft said Tuesday that Nokia’s devices and services business, which Microsoft acquired April 25, lost a stunning $692 million between that date and June 30, the end of the company’s most recent quarter. That loss includes some non-recurring expenses, but Nokia is clearly an unhealthy business. Microsoft is in the midst of a transition led by new CEO Satya Nadella, who announced plans last week to cut 18,000 jobs within the next year, or about 14% of the company. Most of those layoffs — about 12,500 — will come from Nokia. In a memo to Microsoft staff, Nadella said that Microsoft found many redundancies between the two companies, including both professional and factory workers. Nadella’s task now is to figure out how to make Nokia devices running Windows Phone software competitive in a sector dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. He recently announced plans to kill off Nokia’s short-lived “Nokia X” Android smartphone experiment. Other parts of Microsoft’s business are healthier, with search advertising revenue from Bing growing 40% versus a year prior and subscriptions to the company’s Office 365 software rising by 1 million to more than 5.6 million.

Lenovo Spins 180, Says It’s Still In The 8-in. Windows Tablet Game | It News

Windows tablets in the U.S., backing away from statements it made the day before, when it said it was pulling the ThinkPad 8 from the North American market and had stopped selling a model of the Miix 2. “We will continue to bring new Windows devices to market across different screen sizes, including a new 8-inch tablet and 10-inch tablet coming this holiday,” Lenovo said in a press release published on its website Friday. “Our model mix changes as per customer demand, and although we are no longer selling ThinkPad 8 in the U.S., and we have sold out of Miix 8-inch, we are not getting out of the small-screen Windows tablet business as was reported by the media (emphasis in original),” the statement continued. On Thursday, the IDG News Service — like Computerworld, owned and operated by IDG — reported the withdrawal of the ThinkPad 8 and the 8-in. Miix from the U.S. market. The ThinkPad 8 had debuted in January at prices starting at $449, and the similarly-sized Miix had launched in October 2013. Lenovo told IDG News that it was diverting remaining stocks of the ThinkPad 8 to other countries, including Brazil, China, and Japan, where demand was stronger for smaller Windows 8.1-powered tablets. The China-based company, which has made impressive gains in the global market — it was the world’s largest personal computer seller during the second quarter, ahead of Hewlett-Packard and Dell, according to IDC — did not say exactly when it would return with an 8-in. device. If it begins selling the unnamed device in October, typical of OEMs that seed the channel then for the holiday sales season, it will have been absent from the market for two or more months. Lenovo hasn’t been the only company to balk at selling small-sized Windows tablets in the U.S. Microsoft was ready to roll out a smaller Surface tablet , the Surface Mini, in May but changed its mind at the last minute. The day before a May 20 event, Computerworld reported that Microsoft would not unveil the Surface Mini . Later accounts elsewhere claimed that the device was pulled from the presentation — and thus release — as executives feared that the Mini wasn’t sufficiently different from lower-priced rivals to do well in the market. It’s not surprising that vendors are hesitant to shill 8-in.
